Importance of Obeying God
Importance of Obeying God Lesson Objective: To review the experiences of Adam and Eve in failing to obey God and how we can learn from their downfall. This lesson is based upon Bible Study developed by Saddleback Church. Scripture: Genesis 2: 15-17; Genesis 3: 1-3; 1 John 1:9; Matthew 5: 23-24 Memory Verse: 1 John 1: 9- If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness- (NIV) Obedience is based upon our understanding of the need to listen to God and follow his commandments. The following can keep us from obeying God: Lack of Faith Lack of Trust Lack of understanding the need to listen and obey List all the things that God told Adam and Eve not to do- Genesis 2: 15-17 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” In what ways did the serpent change what God had said? Genesis 3: 1-5 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Why did Eve eat the fruit? Genesis 3: 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Why did Adam eat the fruit? Genesis 3:6 What are things in our life that are hard for us to obey? What did Adam and Eve do when they disobeyed God? Genesis 3: 8-13 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate. What should they have done? What should we do when we do something wrong 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness Matthew 5: 23-24 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. What lesson do we learn and how should we share this lesson with others?
