Encouragement- Essential For Many
Encouragement- Essential For Many Lesson Objective: To understand the importance of encouragement Scripture: Acts 4: 36 One of the believers was named Joseph, a Levite born in Cyprus. The apostles called him Barnabas (which means “one who encourages”). 37 Joseph owned a field, sold it, brought the money, and gave it to the apostles Definition of encouragement: the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope: persuasion to do or to continue something A. The Example of Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37) - Scripture: Acts 4:36-37 Explanation: The significance of Barnabas in the early church. His given name was Joseph, but the apostles called him Barnabas, which means "Son of Encouragement." Barnabas is introduced in Acts as a generous encourager who sold his field and gave the proceeds to the apostles to help those in need. Barnabas was not only a man of words but a man of deeds Barnabas's selfless act had a ripple effect, inspiring others to be generous and encouraging in the early Christian community. B. Encouragement in Times of Adversity (1 Samuel 30:1-8) Scripture: 1 Samuel 30: 6-8 David sought encouragement from God. When David sought God first he was successful Encouragement can be a source of strength in times of despair and how it can turn the tide of a situation when people come together to support each other. C . Encouragement in Leadership (Acts 9:26-28) Explanation: Saul, who later became the apostle Paul, was initially feared and distrusted by the disciples in Jerusalem due to his past persecution of Christians. it was Barnabas who stood up for Saul, took him to the apostles, and vouched for his genuine conversion and calling. Barnabas's encouragement and support were instrumental in Paul's acceptance among the disciples and his subsequent ministry. The role of leaders in providing encouragement, recognizing potential, and giving others a chance to grow and serve in the kingdom of God. D. Encouragement and Unity (Romans 15:5-6) Scripture: Romans 15:5-6 “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” Explanation: Read Paul's words about unity and encouragement within the church in Rome. Understand how encouragement can lead to unity by fostering a sense of belonging, mutual support, and love among believers. Other examples from the early church where encouragement strengthened their unity despite various challenges they faced. How can we do as Paul stated? Actively participating in building a harmonious and encouraging church community. E. Encouragement must be a Way of Life (1 Thessalonians 5:11) Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 14: And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone Encouragement should not be reserved for special occasions but should be a habitual practice in our lives. How to incorporate encouragement into daily interactions, such as sending kind messages, offering a listening ear, or providing help when needed. F. Christ sought encouragement Mark 14: They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” **Conclusion The power of encouragement in the life of a believer and the impact it can have on the world cannot be measured What can we do today to encourage others? Think about the point of time when you receive encouragement Become "Barnabas-like" encouragers in your families, workplaces, and communities, spreading positivity and building up others. Thanks
