Guided By The Word- Part 1
"Guided by the Word: Making Decisions in the Light of Scripture" Lesson Objective: To empower us to make wise, God-centered decisions in our lives by understanding and applying Biblical principles. Main Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." Introduction: In a world filled with choices and crossroads, especially for young adults, making decisions can be daunting. As followers of Christ, we are not left to navigate this journey alone. The Bible offers us timeless wisdom and principles that can guide our decision-making process. Today, we will explore how to apply these Biblical truths to the choices we face, ensuring that our decisions honor God and lead us towards His best for our lives. Learn how to make decisions Decisions not based on emotions or reactions Process can be applied to any time that we need to make a decision Definitions: 1. Decision-Making: The process of making choices by identifying a decision, gathering information, and assessing alternative resolutions. 2. Biblical Principles: Fundamental truths or guidelines found in the Bible that instruct and guide moral, ethical, and spiritual conduct. Absolutely, considering the impact of our decisions on others is a key principle found throughout the Bible. The Scriptures emphasize love, compassion, and consideration for others, which should be central to the Christian way of life. Here are a few biblical principles and scriptures that highlight the importance of considering others in our decision-making: 1. **Love Your Neighbor as Yourself**: One of the greatest commandments, as stated by Jesus, is to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39). This commandment implies that in our decisions, we should consider the welfare and interests of others just as we would our own. 2. **The Golden Rule**: In Matthew 7:12, Jesus teaches, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." This principle, often called the Golden Rule, directly applies to decision-making. It encourages us to consider how our choices will affect others and to act towards others as we would wish them to act towards us. 3. **The Example of Christ**: Philippians 2:4-5 says, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." Jesus’ life was a testament to selflessness and considering the needs of others. Our decisions should reflect this Christ-like attitude of valuing others’ well-being. 4. **Building Up the Community**: In 1 Corinthians 10:24, Paul writes, "No one should seek their own good, but the good of others." This principle is particularly relevant in a community or fellowship setting. Decisions should be made with the health and edification of the community in mind. 5. **Avoiding Stumbling Blocks for Others**: Romans 14:13 advises, "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister." This scripture reminds us to consider how our actions and decisions might affect the faith or conscience of our brothers and sisters in Christ. 6. **Practicing Empathy and Understanding**: Hebrews 4:15-16 encourages us to empathize with others, as Jesus did. Understanding the struggles and perspectives of others can significantly influence how we make decisions, especially those that impact them directly. In conclusion, biblically, the effect of our decisions on others is not just a consideration but a fundamental aspect of living out our faith. It reflects the love, compassion, and empathy that are at the heart of Jesus' teachings. As Christians, we are called to make decisions that not only benefit us personally but also contribute positively to the lives of those around us, thereby reflecting the love of Christ in our actions.
