Short Study on Book of Luke Chapters 16-18
Short Study on Book of Luke Chapters 16-18 Lesson Objective: To continue the study of Luke Chapter 16 The Parable of the Shrewd Manager 1-14 Luke 16: 1-2 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’ Q1 What is a steward? What accusation was made against this steward – 16:1? Luke 8-12 The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own Q1. Was the manager dishonest when he reduced the bill of those who owed? Q2. For what did the master commend the steward – 16:8,9? For honesty? Q3. Do you agree with verse 12 and give an example The Rich Man and Lazarus 17-31 Luke 22-24 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire. Q1. Do you believe that this is a true story or parable? Luke 27-31 He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” Q1 Why does the rich man want Lazarus to return from the dead? Q2 Why does Abraham refuse to have Lazarus return from the dead? Chapter 17 Sin, Faith, Duty 1-10 1-3 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. 2 It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 So watch yourselves. Q1 Please explain these verses Q2 How is it relevant to us today? And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6-7 So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. Q1 How do we increase our faith? Q2 Are some more faithful than others? (1 Corinthians 12:9) What are the Power Gifts? ( Revelation, Power and Vocal ) Faith Healing Miracles Ten Lepers Cleansed 11-17 11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Q1 What did one leper do when he had been healed? What did Jesus ask – 17:15-19? Q2 What is the significance about the Samaritan? Q3 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.” What does mean for the others who were healed The Coming of the Kingdom 20-37 20-21 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, [f]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is [g]within you.” John 18:36 ESV Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world Q1 What question was asked of Jesus, and how did He answer – 17:20,21? Q2 Explain the illustration of the eagles (vultures) – 17:37 Chapter 18 The Parable of the Persistent Widow 1-8 1-5 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [a]regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [b]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow troubles me I will [c]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” Q1 What lesson does the parable teach – 18:6-8? (Think: How do you harmonize this with Jesus’ warning against vain repetitions – Matt. 6:7?) The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector 9-14 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be [d]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Q1 What lesson(s) did Jesus say the story teaches? Q2 Was the tax collector saved. Jesus Blesses Little Children 15-17 15 Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Q1 Did Jesus baptize children? Did He say little children need baptism? Explain. Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler 18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Q1. Why do you think he asked this question? Q2. What was the response from Christ? Q3 How does this relate to us today?
