Sin Confession Repentance Part 1
Sin, Confession, Repentance Part I Lesson Objective: To fully understand the process of going from sin to confession to true repentance resulting in the development of a lasting relationship with God. Scripture: Romans 3: 23; 1 John 1:9; Luke 5: 31 and 32 Definitions- dictionary Sin- an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law Confession - a formal statement admitting that one is guilty of a crime; an admission or acknowledgment that one has done something that one is ashamed or embarrassed about. Definition- Bible Sin- The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude or duty, prescribed by God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Confession-Confession is owning up to something you know or believe, and telling it forthrightly to all who should hear it. In the Bible it refers to two things, namely (1) confessing your faith in Christ to the world, and (2) confessing your sins to God Romans 10:9-10 “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart... you shall be saved” 1 John 1:8-10 “If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just to forgive us...” Repentance- Repentance in Christianity means a sincere turning away, in both the mind and heart, from self to God Acts 2: 37-38 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Detailed discussion on sin Sin is voluntary choice usually placing one’s self above God- not content Original sin Genesis 3: 4-6 and the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that Dit was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat There are two major types of sin.. commission and omission James 4:17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them. A sin for me may not be a sin for you Romans 14:1-2 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables Discussion of Confession Romans 10:9-10 “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart... you shall be saved” Baptism is a public confession 1 John 1:8-10 “If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just to forgive us...” Future discussion who can forgive sins? John 20:23 Future Discussions- Why should we confess our sins to one another (James 5:16) Discussion of repentance Repentance should result in an action and not just words Can you repent and still say that if I had to do it all over again I would still do it?
