  Sin Confession Repentance  Part III Road to Forgiveness Lesson Objective:  To continue the series on Sin Confession Repentance with special emphasis on how these are essential for forgiveness and developing a relationship with God. Scriptures:  Matthew 6:14  Psalm 51:4 Review from past lessons Sin The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude or duty, prescribed by God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command Confession is owning up to something you know or believe, and telling it forthrightly to all who should hear it. In the Bible it refers to two things, namely (1) confessing your faith in Christ to the world, and (2) confessing your sins to God Repentance is our decision to make a lifestyle change Outstanding Questions from previous lessons Who can forgive sins? John 20:23 Why should we confess our sins to one another (James 5:16) Can you repent and still say that if I had to do it all over again I would still do it? The importance of forgiveness Romans 6:23 For the wages of <crossreference=nasb-28092ar>sin is death, but the free gift of God is <crossreference=nasb-28092as>eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord</crossreference=nasb-28092as></crossreference=nasb-28092ar> Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace Who can forgive sin? Luke 24: 46-47 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written,[a]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem Confession James 5:16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, [b]fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Psalms 51:4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: Matthew 25: 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. We are obligated to seek forgiveness from those who we have wronged which begins with confession and repentance Repentance Psalms 51: 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. metanoia - It has two usual senses: a "change of mind" and "regret/remorse." Forgiveness and perfection Hebrews 10: 26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, John 8:11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” 1 John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous The road to eternal life begins with repentance and goes through confession and forgiveness.
