Story of David Part III

Study of David Part 1II David flees from Saul   Lesson Objective:  A review of the life of David and how we can learn from both his shortcomings and triumphs so that we can be a man after God’s own heart.   Personal Objectives:   Understand why David was called a man after God’s own heart Understand the importance of true repentance Differentiate between David and Saul Be able to identify character flaws of David Identify lessons to be learned from those character flaws   Scripture: Acts 13: 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’   Scripture: (1 Samuel 30:6) David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. Study Questions: Is the question why God or is it What do you want me to learn God? Why do you think God put David in Saul’s Court? WHY DID DAVID WAIT SO LONG TO BECOME KING? WHY WAS DAVID’S MEN SO ANGRY WITH DAVID WHEN THEY ARRIVED AND FOUND THAT THEIR TOWN HAD BEEN DESTROYED? David lives with the Philistines 1 Samuel 27: 5-7 Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag, and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since. 7 David lived in Philistine territory a year and four months 1 Samuel 27:8-9 And David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the [c]Girzites, and the Amalekites. For those nations were the inhabitants of the land from [d]of old, as you go to Shur, even as far as the land of Egypt. 9 Whenever David [e]attacked the land, he left neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the apparel, and returned and came to Achish 1 Samuel 27: 10- Then Achish would say, “Where have you made a raid today?” And David would say, “Against the southern area of Judah, or against the southern area of the Jerahmeelites, or against the southern area of the Kenites 1 Samuel 27: 11-12 David would save neither man nor woman alive, to bring news to Gath, saying, “Lest they should inform on us, saying, ‘Thus David did.’ ” And thus was his behavior all the time he dwelt in the country of the Philistines. 12 So Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel utterly abhor him; therefore he will be my servant forever.” Saul and David choose different paths when making a decision Saul 1 Samuel 28: 5-7 When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. 6 When Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by prophets. 7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.”   David 1 Samuel 30: 1-2 Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, 2 and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. 1 Samuel 30: 6-7 Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David. 8 So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.   David reflects his character And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them 1 Samuel 30:21
