Taming the Tongue
Sermon 12 Feb 2023 JICF By Blessing Mugwambi Title: Taming the tongue/Controlling the tongue The words that we say represent who we are. If you are not in public, what is your speech like when you talk? The first place to locate true Christianity is from the speech. What comes out of your mouth, is it obscenities or truth? Is it love or anger and bitterness? What is it that comes out of you??? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Your tongue affects your whole life: Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue... Sometimes people hurt you and act like you hurt them. Hurt people, hurt people. What hurt in your heart needs the healing power of the Holy Spirit, so that you can stop hurting yourself, others, and God? You can snare yourself with your own words: Proverbs 6:2 You are snared with the words of your mouth. James 3:7-12 New International Version 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. The Bible compares the tongue to: -A fire: James 3:5 -A burning fire: Proverbs 16:27 -A world of iniquity: James 3:6 -A beast that needs taming: James 3:7-8 -A fountain of either fresh or bitter water: James 3:11 -A tree bearing either good or evil fruit: James 3:12 -An unruly evil: James 3:8 -Deadly poison: James 3:8 -A sharp razor: Psalms 52:2 -A sharp sword: Psalms 57:4; 59:7 -A poisonous serpent: Psalms 140:3 -A deep pit: Proverbs 22:14 Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil; for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Satan uses the things you say to cause a breach (opening) into your spirit: Proverbs 15:4 The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 18:7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 21:23 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. Satan seeks control of your tongue by tempting you to speak: COVETOUS WORDS: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have; for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5). Covetousness definition, eager or excessive desire, especially for wealth or possessions: IDOL WORDS: But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. (Matthew 12:36) EVIL ABOUT THINGS YOU DO NOT KNOW: But these speak evil of those things which they know not... (Jude 10) But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption. (II Peter 2:12) FLATTERING WORDS: For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness. (I Thessalonians 2:5) ENTICING WORDS: I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine sounding arguments. (Colossians 2:4) MURMURING, COMPLAINING, AND BOASTING WORDS: These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want. (Jude 16). VAIN WORDS: Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts (Psalms 12:2). CURSING AND BITTER WORDS: Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. (Romans 3:14) LIES: Let the lying lips be quiet. For they speak with pride and hate those who do right and good. (Psalms 31:18) CONTENTIOUS WORDS: contentious definition: causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. (Proverbs 18:6) How to term your tongue GET YOUR HEART RIGHT WITH GOD: Your mouth will speak what is in your heart. If your heart is not right, your tongue will reveal it. RECOGNIZE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: Recognize you will be held responsible for the words that come out of your mouth: But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Matthew 12:36-37) And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant... (Luke 19:22) REALIZE YOUR WORDS REFLECT ON THE GOSPEL: Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (I Timothy 4:12) KEEP YOUR WORDS FEW AND SIMPLE: Proverbs 10:19 Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK: Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent. Proverbs 17:28 SEPARATE YOURSELF: Separate yourself from those who cannot control their tongue: Stay away from a fool, for you will not find knowledge on their lips. (Proverbs 14:7) LEARN THE POWER OF PEACEFUL WORDS: Peaceful words are more powerful than words of anger: Proverbs 25:15 NLT. Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones. PATTERN YOUR CONVERSATION AFTER JESUS: Jesus spoke gracious words. Luke 4:22 NLT Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn't this Joseph's. End.
