The Church is You and Me"

Sunday Lesson: "The Church is You and Me" Based on Revelation 2–3 Lesson Objectives By the end of this lesson, participants will: 1. Realize that God addresses His people personally through the letters to the churches. 2. Recognize that every believer is responsible for the spiritual health of the “church.” 3. Identify where they may resemble one of the seven churches, and respond to Christ’s call to repent, persevere, or overcome. 4. Be encouraged to stay faithful until Christ’s return, living as temples of the Holy Spirit. ________________________________________ Primary Scriptures • Revelation 2–3 – The letters themselves • 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 – Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit • 1 Peter 2:5 – We are living stones in God’s house • Deuteronomy 10:12–13 – God’s call for obedience and devotion • Micah 6:8 – God’s requirement for His people • Jeremiah 17:10 – God examines the heart • Psalm 139:23–24 – Prayer for God to search us Lesson Outline ________________________________________ 1. Introduction: What is the Church? Question: “When you hear the word church, what comes to mind—this building or the people sitting here?” • In Scripture, the church is the people. The Greek word ekklesia means “called out ones.” • 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 – Our bodies are temples; the Spirit dwells in us. • When Jesus spoke to the seven churches in Revelation, He wasn’t evaluating architecture or programs—He was evaluating hearts. ________________________________________ 2. Overview of the Seven Letters For each letter: 1. Ephesus – Lost First Love (Revelation 2:4–5) • They were hardworking and doctrinally sound, but their love for Christ grew cold. • Application: Am I still in love with Christ, or just going through motions? • OT Connection: Deuteronomy 6:5 – Love the Lord with all your heart. • Challenge: Reignite your passion—remember, repent, and return. ________________________________________ 2. Smyrna – Be Faithful in Trials (Revelation 2:10) • Commended for endurance despite poverty and persecution. • Application: When I face hardship, do I stay faithful? • OT Connection: Isaiah 41:10 – God promises strength and help. • Challenge: Trust God in the storm, knowing He sees your faithfulness. ________________________________________ 3. Pergamum – Guard Against Compromise (Revelation 2:14–16) • They tolerated false teaching and immorality. • Application: Where am I tempted to compromise my faith to “fit in”? • OT Connection: Joshua 24:15 – “Choose today whom you will serve.” • Challenge: Stand firm in truth even when the culture pressures you. ________________________________________ 4. Thyatira – Reject False Teaching (Revelation 2:20–21) • They were loving and serving, but tolerated false teachers. • Application: Am I discerning about what I listen to, watch, or believe? • OT Connection: Deuteronomy 13:1–4 – Test all teaching by God’s Word. • Challenge: Strengthen your discernment through Scripture. ________________________________________ 5. Sardis – Wake Up Spiritually (Revelation 3:1–3) • Outwardly alive, inwardly dead. Reputation didn’t match reality. • Application: Am I spiritually alive, or coasting on reputation? • OT Connection: Ezekiel 37:5–6 – God can breathe life into dry bones. • Challenge: Wake up, repent, and strengthen what remains. ________________________________________ 6. Philadelphia – Remain Faithful (Revelation 3:8, 11) • Commended for keeping Christ’s word and not denying His name. • Application: Am I holding fast, even in small strength? • OT Connection: Psalm 119:11 – Hide God’s Word in your heart. • Challenge: Stay steady in obedience, however small it feels. ________________________________________ 7. Laodicea – Do Not Be Lukewarm (Revelation 3:15–20) • Neither hot nor cold; self-satisfied and blind to true need. • Application: Is my faith lukewarm—half-hearted, casual, complacent? • OT Connection: Jeremiah 29:13 – “Seek me with all your heart.” • Challenge: Invite Christ to “dine with you” daily (Rev. 3:20). ________________________________________ 3. Old Testament Parallels God always called His people to personal faithfulness: o Micah 6:8 – Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly. o Deuteronomy 10:12–13 – Fear God, love Him, serve Him. o Jeremiah 17:10 – The Lord searches hearts individually. • Transition: The NT letters echo the same call: God wants your heart, not just outward religion. ________________________________________ 4. Closing Exhortation • Read Revelation 3:20 – Christ knocks at the door. • Read several promises “to the one who overcomes” (Rev. 2:7, 2:11, 2:17, 3:5, 3:12, 3:21). • These promises are for individual believers who remain faithful. • End with Psalm 139:23–24 – Prayer for God to search our hearts. ________________________________________
