What Will You Do? Lesson objective: To identify opportunities for New Year resolutions that we can keep for the coming year. Scriptures: James 4: 13-17; Romans 12:1; Exodus 20:17 Someone once wrote this short poem: “Though you cannot go back and make a brand new start, my friend. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new end.” History of New Years Resolutions Thouglht to have begun by Babylonians 4000 years ago Also followed up by Romans in 46 BC with the event of the Roman (Julian) calendar First known modern Christian news years event was recorded in 1740 Modern resolutions Secular in nature rather than Godly Concentrate of self improvement 45% of Americans set new year resolutions and 8% are successful KEYS TO GREAT RESOLUTIONS What is the motive for the resolution Are your resolutions personal How does your resolution affect others Example Why do you want to lose weight- Romans 12: 1 Putting our financial house in order- Exodus 20:17 and Philippians 4: 11-13 Including God in our resolutions James 4: 13 Minimize the number of resolutions – Matthew 22: 36-40 John 13: 34-35 and John 15:12 Make resolutions about others and not yourself Matthew 25: 36-37 Make resolution quantifiable Have someone hold you accountable Someone once wrote this short poem: “Though you cannot go back and make a brand new start, my friend.
