WISDOM THE DESIRE OF ALL Part 1 Lesson Objective: To gain some wisdom by studying the words of Solomon Scripture: Proverbs 9: 10 and other selected verses from the book of Proverbs Introduction: Definition of Knowledge: Know facts. able to collect, remember, and access information Definition of Understanding: ability to translate meaning from the facts Definition of Wisdom: the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment: A. Who was Solomon a. King of Israel- Son of David b. Author of three books Proverbs, Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes c. Considered to be the wisest man who ever lived B. Who was the book written to and for what purpose- Chapter 1 1-7 a. Written to those who are willing to hear Verse 3 b. Written to those who see wisdom and understanding Verse 5-6 c. The reader/hearer can respond one of two ways i. Wisdom and fear the Lord ii. Foolishness C. Be careful from whom you seek counsel Verse 8-20 a. Hear the instructions of the father and mother Verse 8 and 9 b. Stay away from those who do not fear God D. Those who forsake the call of wisdom will pay the price a. Under distress many will seek wisdom but it will be too late Verse 1: 28 b. They must suffer the consequences of their actions- Verses 30-32 E. The wise will be protected and prosper from evil- Verse 33 F. Some blessings are conditional and some are non- conditional- verses Chapter 2: 1-4 are conditional ( IF) ( Then) G. We must continually seek wisdom and understanding and discernment – 2: 1-3 H. What is the value of wisdom and understanding 2: 4 I. What do you gain?- Verses 5-8 and 9- 15 Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom. Charles Spurgeon
