Preparation for marriage

SERMON SERIES: MARRIAGE — GOD’S DESIGN FOR A LIFETIME ________________________________________ Lesson 1 Preparation for Marriage Lesson Objective To help believers understand the biblical foundation of marriage and how to prepare spiritually, emotionally, and practically before entering it. ________________________________________ I. Introduction • Marriage was created by God, not man. • It is a covenant, not a contract. • It requires preparation, just like any other important calling. Opening Scripture: Genesis 2:18, 24 — “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him... Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Illustration: Before building a house, you first lay the foundation. If the foundation is weak, the entire structure collapses. Marriage works the same way — the foundation must be laid before the wedding day. ________________________________________ II. Be Spiritually Prepared Scripture: Psalm 127:1 — “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” • Marriage is a spiritual covenant; you cannot build it on physical attraction alone. • A relationship without Christ at the center will struggle when trials come. • Your personal relationship with God should be strong before you seek a partner. Application Questions: • Is Christ the foundation of my life today? • Do I pray regularly for God’s will in my future or current relationship? Practical Tip: Encourage young believers to develop habits like prayer, service, and accountability before marriage. ________________________________________ III. Seek God’s Will, Not Just Your Feelings Scripture: Proverbs 3:5–6 — “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” • Feelings are temporary; God’s guidance is eternal. • The heart can deceive, but the Word of God provides clarity. • God’s choice will bring peace, not confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:33) Illustration: Abraham’s servant sought God’s will before choosing Rebekah for Isaac (Genesis 24). He prayed, waited for a sign, and God confirmed it. Application: • Don’t be in a hurry — waiting on God’s timing saves a lifetime of pain. • Involve godly mentors or pastors for counsel before engagement or marriage. • Marriage Counseling before announcing intentions. ________________________________________ IV. Build on Friendship and Shared Faith Scripture: Amos 3:3 — “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” • True companionship in marriage grows out of friendship and shared values. • Physical attraction fades; spiritual unity lasts. • A godly marriage is based on commitment, character, and compatibility in faith. Illustration: Think of marriage as two oxen yoked together (Matthew 11:29–30). If one pulls in a different direction, progress is impossible. Application: Choose a partner who shares your love for God and your purpose in life. ________________________________________ V. Practice Commitment Before Marriage Scripture: Luke 16:10 — “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much.” • Faithfulness begins before marriage — in finances, work, and spiritual life. • A person who cannot keep promises before marriage will not suddenly change afterward. Practical Point: Preparation for marriage means learning responsibility, patience, and humility. ________________________________________ VI. Summary and Reflection • Godly marriage begins with a godly person. • Preparation involves spiritual growth, wise discernment, and waiting for God’s timing. • “Better to prepare and wait than to rush and regret.” ________________________________________ VII. Discussion/Reflection Questions 1. What qualities should a Christian look for in a spouse? 2. How can someone know God’s will in choosing a partner? 3. Why is spiritual maturity important before marriage? ________________________________________ VIII. Closing Prayer “Lord, thank You for designing marriage as a holy covenant. Help us prepare with wisdom and purity. Teach us to trust Your timing and to become the kind of people who reflect Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
