The Power of Pentacost
THE POWER OF PENTECOST Lesson Objective: To discuss one of the most important events recorded in the Bible. The Old Testament roots, New Testament fulfillment, and modern-day implications of Pentecost. Scripture: Jeremiah 31:33-34 and Acts 2: 1-13 Introduction – What is Pentecost? Opening Question: “If you could witness one biblical event in person, what would it be?” Brief Explanation: - Pentecost (Greek: Pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth”) was a Jewish festival 50 days after Passover. - In the New Testament, it became the day the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples (Acts 2). - Two Key Aspects: 1. Agricultural Festival – Celebration of firstfruits (Exodus 23:16). 2. Historical Tradition – Many Jews believed it was when God gave the Law to Moses at Sinai. Why did God choose this day to send the Holy Spirit? Let’s look at the Old Testament background.” --- II. Discussion in the Old Testament A. The Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) – Leviticus 23:15–22 - Timing: 50 days after Passover (hence “Pentecost”). - Purpose: - Thank God for the wheat harvest (firstfruits offering). - Remember Israel’s dependence on God (Deuteronomy 16:9–12). - Symbolism: - Just as bread sustains physical life, the Word (Law) and Spirit sustain spiritual life. B. Pentecost & Mount Sinai (Exodus 19–20) - Jewish Tradition: Many rabbis taught that God gave the Torah to Moses on this day. Discussion Question: “Why do you think God used fire and wind at both Sinai and Pentecost?” III. New Testament Fulfillment A. The Descent of the Spirit (Acts 2:1–13) - Three Miraculous Signs: 1. Sound of a Mighty Wind – Symbolizes God’s presence (Ezekiel 37:9–14). 2. Tongues of Fire – Purification and empowerment (Matthew 3:11). 3. Speaking in Other Languages – Reverses Babel (Gen 11:7–9) and signals the Gospel is for all nations. - Why Pentecost? - God chose this day to show that the Spirit fulfills the Law (Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 36:27). - Jesus, the “firstfruits” (1 Cor 15:20), now sends the Spirit to harvest souls. B. Peter’s Sermon (Acts 2:14–41) - Key OT Quotes: - Joel 2:28–32 – The Spirit will be poured out on all flesh (not just prophets/priests). - Psalm 16:8–11 – Proves Jesus’ resurrection was foretold. - Psalm 110:1 – Jesus is now exalted as Lord. - Result: 3,000 baptized—the first harvest of the Church. Discussion Question: “Why was it significant that people from ‘every nation’ heard the Gospel in their language?” IV. Historical & Theological Impact - Birth of the Church: Pentecost marks the beginning of the global mission (Acts 1:8). - New Covenant Reality: - The Law was written on stone; now, the Spirit writes it on hearts (2 Cor 3:3). - The Spirit indwells all believers, not just a select few (1 Cor 12:13). - Continuation Today: The same Spirit empowers us for witness, unity, and holiness. V. Application 1. Personal Reflection: - “Are we living in the Spirit’s power, or relying on our own strength?” (Galatians 5:25) 2. Missional Challenge: - The Gospel is for every tribe and tongue—how can we engage unreached people? 3. Prayer for Empowerment: - “Lord, fill us afresh with Your Spirit for boldness and love.” VI. Closing Prayer - Thank God for the gift of the Spirit. - Ask for fresh boldness, unity, and harvest.
