Balancing the Love of God and the Wrath of God

LESSON: Balancing the Love of God and the Wrath of God ________________________________________ Lesson Objective To understand how God's love and wrath are not contradictory, but part of His perfect holiness and justice, and how this balance affects our faith, worship, and witness. ________________________________________ 1.Foundational Truth: Scripture “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love... yet He will by no means clear the guilty.” — Exodus 34:6–7 MEMORY VERSE “Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God.” — Romans 11:22 This verse reveals both God’s love and wrath side by side. ________________________________________ 2. GOD’S LOVE — Examples and Insights Old Testament Examples: • Covenant with Abraham (Genesis 15, 17) God’s faithfulness and love in choosing and blessing Abraham and his descendants despite their flaws. • Exodus and the Wilderness (Exodus 14, 16–17) God delivers Israel from Egypt out of love and compassion, even when they constantly complain. • Hosea and Gomer (Hosea 1–3) A symbolic story of God’s enduring love for His unfaithful people. Hosea pursues Gomer, just as God pursues Israel. “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely...” — Hosea 14:4 ________________________________________ New Testament Examples: • Jesus’ Mission “For God so loved the world…” — John 3:16 Jesus’ incarnation, death, and resurrection are the ultimate demonstration of divine love. • The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32) God portrayed as a loving Father, eagerly welcoming the repentant sinner. • Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ________________________________________ 3.GOD’S WRATH — Examples and Insights Old Testament Examples: • The Flood (Genesis 6–9) God’s judgment on the wickedness of humanity—but He saves Noah, showing mercy within judgment. • Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) God's wrath against rampant immorality and injustice—yet He rescues Lot’s family. • Golden Calf Incident (Exodus 32–34) God expresses anger, threatens destruction, but ultimately relents after Moses’ intercession. • Exile of Israel and Judah (2 Kings 17; 2 Chronicles 36) Repeated idolatry and injustice result in God using foreign nations to bring judgment—but always with a promise of return. “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.” — Ezekiel 33:11 ________________________________________ New Testament Examples: • Jesus Clears the Temple (John 2:13–17) Jesus is loving, yet He is zealous for holiness and justice. • Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) God’s immediate judgment for hypocrisy in the early church. • Romans 1:18–32 God’s wrath is revealed against those who suppress the truth and embrace idolatry and sin. • Book of Revelation (Revelation 14:10, 19:15) Jesus as Judge returns in wrath against evil and rebellion at the end of the age. ________________________________________ 4. THE BALANCE AT THE CROSS “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree...” — 1 Peter 2:24 • The Cross is where God’s wrath and love meet perfectly. o God’s justice (wrath) demands that sin be punished. o God’s mercy (love) offers Jesus as a substitute. o Romans 3:25–26: God is both just and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus. ________________________________________ 5. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Why is it important to teach about both God’s love and His wrath? 2. Which do you tend to emphasize more in your personal view of God? Why? 3. How does the idea of God’s wrath make His love more meaningful? ________________________________________ 6. APPLICATION FOR BELIEVERS Area What to Do Personal Devotion Cultivate both reverence and intimacy. Worship God in awe and love. Evangelism Share the full Gospel — sin, judgment, but also mercy and grace. Don’t sugarcoat or scare, but present both. Discipleship Teach new believers to take sin seriously, but also to rest in God's love. Church Life Encourage a culture of holiness and compassion, reflecting both God’s justice and mercy. ________________________________________
