Baptism and Communion
Baptism & Communion Objective: To understand the significance, purpose, and biblical foundation of Baptism and Communion. Scripture 1. Introduction Brief Overview: Today’s lesson will explore two important Christian practices: Baptism and Communion (also called the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist). Many churches tie these two practices together but our church does not believe that one is dependent on the other. 2. Baptism A. What is Baptism? A public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ. Symbolizes dying to sin and being raised to new life in Christ. B. Biblical Basis Matthew 28:19-20 – The Great Commission: "Go and make disciples... baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." Romans 6:3-4 – Baptism represents our death and resurrection with Christ. Acts 2:38 – Peter’s command: "Repent and be baptized..." C. The New Testament mentions four different baptisms. These are: -Christ's baptism of suffering Mark 10:38 -The baptism of John Matthew 3: 7-11 -Christian baptism Matthew 3: 13-17 -Baptism in the Holy Spirit D. REQUIREMENTS FOR BAPTISM Taught Matthew 28: 19 Repentance Acts 2:38 Faith Mark 16:15-16 A GOOD CONSCIENCE TOWARD GOD: I Peter 3:21 D. Modes of Baptism Immersion – Fully submerged Sprinkling/Pouring – Used in some traditions Infant vs. Believer’s Baptism – We do not baptize children Discussion Question: “Why do you think Jesus Himself was baptized (Matthew 3:13-17)?” 3. Communion A. What is Communion? A sacred meal remembering Jesus’ sacrifice. Bread represents His body, and wine (or juice) represents His blood. B. Biblical Basis Luke 22:19-20 – Jesus institutes communion at the Last Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 – Paul’s teaching on taking Communion in remembrance of Christ. C. The Meaning of Communion ) Remembrance – Honoring Christ’s death. Fellowship – Unity in the body of Christ. Examination – Preparing our hearts before participating (1 Corinthians 11:28). Discussion Question: “How does taking Communion help you reflect on your relationship with Jesus?” 4. Wrap-Up & Application (10 min) Reflection Questions: 1.Have you been baptized? If not, what is stopping you? 2.How can Communion become more meaningful in your life? 3.What is one thing you learned today that you didn’t know before? Closing Prayer: Thank God for the gift of Baptism and Communion, asking Him to deepen our understanding and appreciation of these sacraments.
