Elijah and Elisha
The Lives of Elijah and Elisha Primary Scripture: 2 Kings 2:9-10: "When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?’ ‘Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,’ Elisha replied. ‘You have asked a difficult thing,’ Elijah said, ‘yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.’" Lesson Objectives: To explore the relationship between Elijah and Elisha, emphasizing their faith, obedience, and the importance of spiritual mentorship and legacy in fulfilling God's purpose. I. Introduction to Elijah and Elisha 1. Who Were Elijah and Elisha? - Elijah: A prophet in Israel known for his powerful confrontations with the idolatry of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. His name means "My God is Yahweh." - Elisha: A prophet and successor to Elijah, known for his miracles and influence in Israel's history. His name means "My God is Salvation." 2. Key Themes in Their Ministries: - Faithfulness to God amid widespread idolatry. - Miracles as signs of God’s power and presence. - A deep dedication to God’s people. II. Elijah’s Life and Ministry 1. Elijah’s Call and Boldness - Biblical Reference: 1 Kings 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe[a] in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” - Elijah’s ministry begins with a declaration of drought as punishment for Israel’s sin. - Character Trait: Courageous in the face of opposition; unwavering in his call to confront sin. 2. Miracles Performed by Elijah Provision for the Widow at Zarephath: 1 Kings 17:8-24.
