Godly Leadership—Strengths, Weaknesses, and God’s Calling

Sermon: Godly Leadership—Strengths, Weaknesses, and God’s Calling Lesson Objectives 1. To understand that leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility given by God. 2. To learn from biblical leaders who displayed strengths and weaknesses. 3. To recognize that God uses imperfect people to accomplish His purposes. 4. To apply principles of godly leadership in our personal lives, families, and communities. ________________________________________ Primary Scriptures • Old Testament: o Moses: Exodus 3:10-12 o David: 1 Samuel 16:7; Psalm 78:72 • New Testament: o Peter: Matthew 16:18; Luke 22:61-62 o Paul: Acts 20:28; 2 Corinthians 12:9 ________________________________________ Introduction Leadership is not about position, but about influence, responsibility, and service. The Bible gives us real examples of leaders who were strong in some areas and weak in others. God chose them not because they were perfect, but because they were willing and teachable. ________________________________________ Examples of Leaders 1. Moses – The Reluctant Leader • Strengths: o Deep humility (Numbers 12:3). o Faithful intercessor for Israel (Exodus 32:11-14). o Obedient to God’s call despite fear. • Weaknesses: o Initially resisted God’s call due to insecurity (Exodus 4:10). o Struggled with anger (striking the rock, Numbers 20:10-12). • Lesson: God equips those He calls, even if they feel unworthy. ________________________________________ 2. David – The Shepherd King • Strengths: o A heart after God (1 Samuel 13:14). o Courageous faith against Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45). o Shepherded Israel with integrity and skill (Psalm 78:72). • Weaknesses: o Fell into sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11). o Failed at times as a father and in family leadership. • Lesson: Great leaders must guard against personal sin, but God forgives and restores the repentant. ________________________________________ 3. Peter – The Impulsive Disciple • Strengths: o Passionate and bold (confessed Jesus as the Christ, Matthew 16:16). o First preacher at Pentecost, leading thousands to Christ (Acts 2). • Weaknesses: o Quick-tempered and impulsive (cut off the servant’s ear, John 18:10). o Denied Jesus three times out of fear (Luke 22:61-62). • Lesson: A leader may stumble, but God restores and strengthens for greater service. ________________________________________ 4. Paul – The Tireless Missionary • Strengths: o Tireless worker for the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:10). o Visionary leader, planting churches across the Roman world. o Courageous in persecution (Acts 20:24). • Weaknesses: o Had a “thorn in the flesh” (possible physical or emotional struggle, 2 Corinthians 12:7). o Sometimes had conflicts (sharp disagreement with Barnabas, Acts 15:39). • Lesson: Leaders are not free from personal struggles, but God’s grace is sufficient for their calling. ________________________________________ Application for Today 1. Leadership is about service, not status (Mark 10:45). 2. God calls ordinary people and uses them in extraordinary ways. 3. Our weaknesses do not disqualify us—God’s power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). 4. Every believer has a sphere of leadership—in family, work, or ministry. ________________________________________ Conclusion True leadership is not about perfection but about faithfulness to God’s call. Like Moses, David, Peter, and Paul, we can lead with humility, courage, and reliance on God’s grace. God is looking for leaders who will serve with integrity, repent when they fall, and trust Him to guide them. ________________________________________
