Making a Difference
Title Making a Difference in the Lives of Others Good morning, everyone. Today we are talking about a theme that is both simple and deeply powerful: making a difference in the lives of others. Let me begin with a story. ( I am sure that it has happened many times) There was once a teacher who noticed that a little boy in her class was struggling. One day she leaned down and said quietly, “I believe in you. You can do this.” Years later, that boy became a leader who inspired thousands of people. When asked what made the difference, he said, “It was the moment my teacher told me she believed in me.” That’s the truth of our lesson today: one small act of love or encouragement can change a life forever. Let me ask you: Has someone ever made a difference in your life in a simple but powerful way? ________________________________________ Part I: God’s Call to Make a Difference The Bible makes it clear that God wants His people to be a blessing to others. Micah 6:8 says: “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Making a difference begins with this heart—living with justice, mercy, and humility. Proverbs 3:27 reminds us: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” If we are able to help, we should. And Isaiah 58:10 says: “If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness…” Examples from the Old Testament: • Joseph: In Genesis 41, Joseph’s wisdom in Egypt not only saved the nation from famine but also rescued his own family. His faithfulness made a difference for an entire region. • Ruth: In Ruth 1:16–17, she stayed with Naomi, saying, “Your people will be my people and your God my God.” Her love changed both of their lives and placed her in the line of Jesus. • Esther: In Esther 4:14, she was told she had come to the kingdom “for such a time as this.” Her courage saved her people from destruction. Key Point: God positions us in specific places and moments to bless and help others. ________________________________________ Part II: The Example of Jesus When we look at Jesus’ life, everything He did was about making a difference. Matthew 5:14–16 says: “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Jesus showed us what that light looks like. He healed the sick, welcomed children, comforted the brokenhearted, and forgave sinners. Examples from Jesus’ life: • The Feeding of the 5,000 (John 6:1–14): One boy gave Jesus his small lunch. Jesus multiplied it to feed thousands. This reminds us that even small offerings can make a huge difference in God’s hands. • The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37): A man crossed boundaries of culture and religion to help someone in need. Jesus taught us that “neighbor” means anyone we meet who needs compassion. • Healing the Blind Man (John 9): Jesus gave sight not only to his eyes but hope to his life. Key Point: To make a difference, we don’t need to do everything. We just need to do what we can, faithfully, in the spirit of Jesus. ________________________________________ Part III: The Early Church and Ordinary Believers After Jesus’ resurrection, His followers carried on His mission. Galatians 6:9–10 tells us: “Let us not become weary in doing good… as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” James 2:14–17 reminds us: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Examples from the Early Church: • Dorcas/Tabitha (Acts 9:36–42): She was known for sewing clothes for widows and helping the poor. When she died, the community wept so bitterly that Peter came and raised her from the dead. That shows how deeply her service touched lives. • Barnabas (Acts 4:36–37; 9:26–27): His name means “son of encouragement.” He encouraged Paul when others doubted him and gave generously to the church. His encouragement changed the course of Paul’s ministry. • Paul and Silas in prison (Acts 16:25–34): Instead of complaining, they sang hymns. Their testimony led the jailer and his whole household to faith in Christ. Modern Examples: • Mother Teresa: She gave her life to care for the sick and dying in India, showing the world Christ’s compassion. • Everyday believers: A Christian neighbor who brings food to a sick family, or someone who prays with a friend during a crisis. These simple acts change lives more than we realize. ________________________________________ Conclusion Let’s bring this together. God calls us to make a difference—not always in big, dramatic ways, but often in simple, faithful acts of love. Joseph saved nations, Ruth cared for her mother-in-law, Esther spoke up with courage, Jesus fed the hungry and healed the broken, Dorcas sewed clothes for widows, and Barnabas encouraged others. And Jesus tells us in Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” So here’s the challenge: This week, look for one intentional way to bless someone—an encouraging word, a helping hand, a prayer, or a simple gift. You may never know the full impact, but God does. ________________________________________ Closing Prayer “Lord, thank You for the people who have made a difference in our lives. Help us to see the opportunities You give us each day to shine Your light. Give us courage to act, compassion to care, and faith to believe that even small deeds can have eternal impact. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” ________________________________________
