Walking Worthy: Lessons from the Shoes We Wear”
Walking Worthy: Lessons from the Shoes We Wear” Primary Scriptures: • Ephesians 4:1 – “I… beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.” • Ephesians 6:15 – “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” ________________________________________ Lesson Objectives: 1. To help believers recognize spiritual dangers in their daily walk. 2. To illustrate these dangers through the symbolism of shoes. 3. To call Christians to walk in diligence, purity, humility, commitment, endurance, and freedom in Christ. ________________________________________ Sermon Body 1. Loafers – Laziness in the Christian Life • Old Testament: Proverbs 6:6–9 – “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise…” • New Testament: Colossians 3:23 – “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” • Example: The sluggard in Proverbs loves sleep and idleness, while Paul worked with his own hands making tents (Acts 18:3) to avoid being a burden. • Lesson: Christianity is not passive—we must actively serve, pray, and witness. Lazy Christianity leads to spiritual poverty. ________________________________________ 2. Sandals – Picking Up Dirt from the World • Old Testament: Isaiah 52:11 – “Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing…” • New Testament: John 13:10 – “He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit.” • Example: Israel picked up the “dirt” of idolatry from surrounding nations, while Jesus washed the disciples’ feet to remind them of daily cleansing. • Lesson: Even believers who are saved need daily cleansing from worldly thoughts, words, and actions. ________________________________________ 3. High Heels – Pride and Self-Exaltation • Old Testament: Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” • New Testament: James 4:6 – “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” • Example: King Nebuchadnezzar walked in pride and lost his kingdom (Daniel 4:30–33). In contrast, Jesus humbled Himself, even unto death on a cross (Philippians 2:5–8). • Lesson: Pride lifts us up artificially but leads to instability and fall. Christians must walk humbly before God. ________________________________________ 4. Flip-Flops – Lack of Commitment • Old Testament: 1 Kings 18:21 – Elijah asked Israel, “How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.” • New Testament: Revelation 3:16 – “So then because thou art lukewarm… I will spue thee out of my mouth.” • Example: Israel wavered between God and Baal. In the New Testament, Demas forsook Paul, loving this present world (2 Timothy 4:10). • Lesson: Flip-flop Christianity is unstable. God calls us to be steadfast, not half-committed. ________________________________________ 5. Running Shoes – Running in the Wrong Direction • Old Testament: Jonah 1:3 – Jonah ran away from God’s call. • New Testament: 1 Corinthians 9:24 – “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.” • Example: Jonah ran away from God’s will and ended up in the belly of a fish. Paul, however, said, “I press toward the mark” (Philippians 3:14). • Lesson: Many run fast, but in the wrong direction—chasing wealth, fame, or pleasure. Christians must run toward Christ, not away from Him. ________________________________________ 6. Heavy Boots – Burdened by Sin or Worry • Old Testament: Psalm 38:4 – “Mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.” • New Testament: Matthew 11:28 – “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” • Example: Cain walked with the heavy burden of guilt after killing Abel (Genesis 4:13). In the New Testament, Jesus invited the weary to lay down their burdens. • Lesson: Heavy boots slow us down. We must lay aside sin, guilt, and anxiety to walk freely with Christ. ________________________________________ 7. Worn-Out Shoes – Living in the Past • Old Testament: Isaiah 43:18–19 – “Remember ye not the former things… behold, I will do a new thing.” • New Testament: 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” • Example: Israel longed for Egypt even after God delivered them (Exodus 16:3). Paul, however, said, “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before” (Philippians 3:13). • Lesson: Christians cannot walk forward while clinging to old sins, failures, or regrets. God calls us to a new walk in Him. ________________________________________ Application / Call to Action • “What shoes are you wearing in your walk with God today?” • Remove the “wrong shoes” (laziness, pride, worldliness, burdens, past failures) and put on the Gospel Shoes of Peace (Ephesians 6:15). ________________________________________ Conclusion • Every shoe leaves a footprint—so does every life. • Christians are called to leave footprints of faith, love, and holiness. • Final Scripture: Micah 6:8 – “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
