  • Message: “Revisiting the importance of Love” from Joe Summers

A message from the series "Sunday Service." Revisiting the need for Love Lesson Objective: To revisit the necessity to have love throughout our life. Scripture; 1 Corinthian 13: If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. INTRODUCTION There are several usages for the word love: 1. Eros love—romantic love- sexual (Greeks felt that this was dangerous love) 2. Ludus-Ludus is a light and flirtatious expression of love 3. Pragma- This love embodies commitment, structure, and a common vision for the future 4. Philia/Storage- Brotherly love. It was about showing loyalty, giving sacrifice, showing appreciation and love of family 5. Agape- Godly love—love of strangers. Expecting nothing in return- Godly love Examples in the Bible Eros love- 2 Samuel 13: 1-2 Now David’s son Absalom had a beautiful sister named Tamar. And Amnon, her half brother, fell desperately in love with her. 2 Amnon became so obsessed with Tamar that he became ill. She was a virgin, and Amnon thought he could never have her. 12-15: “No, my brother!” she cried. “Don’t be foolish! Don’t do this to me! Such wicked things aren’t done in Israel. 13 Where could I go in my shame? And you would be called one of the greatest fools in Israel. Please, just speak to the king about it, and he will let you marry me.” 14 But Amnon wouldn’t listen to her, and since he was stronger than she was, he raped her. 15 Then suddenly Amnon’s love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. “Get out of here!” he snarled at her. 1. What does this say about how we should be careful when we act based on Eros love? 2. Do you think the Greeks were right about how they viewed this type of love? 3. How does this affect how we must view social ads, etc. ? Philia Love- 1 Samuel 18: 1-54As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan dloved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day eand would not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because dhe loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt 1. How did David demonstrate his love for Johnathan? 2. How do we in the Church demonstrate this type of love? Storge Love- Genesis 14: 14-16 Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is [d]north of Damascus. 16 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people. 1. What can prevent family members from having this type of love? 2. What other experience concerning Abram and Lot demonstrated this love? Agape Love Good Samaritan- Luke 10: 33-35 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 1. How difficult is it to show agape love? Varied scriptures in the Bible on Love ROMANS 8:28 (4) We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. GALATIANS 5:22 (24) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness ROMANS 8:39 (98) … nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • Message: “Mothers In The Bible” from Joe Summers

A message from the series "Sunday Service." Mothers in the Bible Lesson Objective: To look at some of the mothers identified in the Bible and the lessons that we can learn. Introduction- How was Mother’s Day started? The first Mother's Day celebration was held in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia. It was organized by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her late mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. She held a memorial service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, and distributed 500 white carnations, her mother's favorite flower. The carnations were meant to represent the purity of a mother's love. The event was so successful that Jarvis began a campaign to make Mother's Day a national holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Today the tradition of flowers continues with many wearing white flower if mother is deceased and red if mother is still alive. 1. Sarah: Sarah was the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac. • Message: “Labor Day Celebration” from Joe Summers

A message from the series "Sunday Service." Celebrating Labor Day Lesson Objective: To discuss various scriptures in the Bible that demonstrate the importance of Labor Scripture: Ephesians 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need. Various Scriptures in the Bible that discusses labor (work) Ecclesiastes 9:9-10 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom 1) How does meaningless in this verse relate to work? Luke 6: 43-45 For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [a]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. 1) Why in the past did people sign their work? (inspected by) 2) How do the results of your labor demonstrate how well you labor? Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:23-24 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving 1) How does one do this in reality when they do not like their job? 2) How does one do this when they do not like their boss? 3) How does this fit with the verse Rejoice Always 1st Thessalonians 5:16 Ephesians 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need 1) What does this verse say about the purpose of working? 2) Please define stealing and give examples 2 Thessalonians 3: 10-13 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and [a]exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. 13 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. 1) Do you agree? 2) How does verse 13 relate to work? 1 Thessalonians 4: 10-12 and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; 11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing. 1) How does work allow us to witness? Summary Work is not a sign of selfishness but a sign of sharing Let our work be a testament to God We are not defined by our job but we are defined by the results of the job

  • Message: “What is the Attitude of this Church JICF?” from Joe Summers

A message from the series "Sunday Service." What is the Attitude of this Church? Lesson Objective: The purpose of this lesson is to identify key attributes necessary for any Church to develop spiritual maturity and to upbuild the kingdom of God Scripture: Matthew 28: 18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Introduction: Attitude Definition: a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior Altitude Definition: the height of something (such as an airplane) above the level of the sea What is the importance of Attitude? Your altitude is most often decided by your attitude How high do you want to go? Did You ever know that You’re my hero, and everything I would like to be? I can fly higher than an eagle, ’cause You are the Wind beneath my wings. God through the Holy Spirit Is the wind beneath our wings but we must have Godly attitudes Godly Attitudes: o Love of God and our fellowman attitude o Truth Seeking attitude o Attitude of Servitude o Attitude for Action o Attitude of Forbearance and Patience o Attitude of Unity and Peace o ???????? Guess ????????? Love of God and our fellowman attitude Matthew 22: 37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Truth Seeking attitude John 8: 31-34 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Attitude of Servitude Biblical definition Matthew 20: 26-28 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many It is interesting that one has the opportunity to choose to be a servant and as Christ said choose to serve and not to be served. Attitude for Action We have work to do- Matthew 9:37; Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Work and faith go hand in hand- James 2: 14-20 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Attitude of Forbearance and Patience James 5: 7-8 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Need for patience with all - 1 Thessalonians 5: 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Attitude of Unity and Peace Definition of Unity- To become one in thought, desire, and purpose first with our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ, and then with other Saints Church should be joined together 1 Corinthians 10-13 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas[b]”; still another, “I follow Christ.”13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? Christ prayed for Unity for the Church- John 17: 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[a] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. Summary Factors one should have for unity and peace- 1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Love and commitment to truth leads to Unity and Peace Truly thinking of the well being of others- Philippians 2: 2-5 One Body- Ephesians 4: 2-6 Service to Others lead to Unity and Peace 1 Corinthians 12: 17-25 Serving the body - Romans 12: 3-8 Each using their gifts to build the kingdom of God Ephesians 4: 11-13 1 Corinthians 12: 14-16 We are all part of God’s family- 1 John 3: 1 Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. What attitude do YOU bring to the CHURCH?

  • Message: “Short Study on Book of Luke Chapters 16-18” from Joe Summers

A message from the series "Sunday Service." Short Study on Book of Luke Chapters 16-18 Lesson Objective: To continue the study of Luke Chapter 16 The Parable of the Shrewd Manager 1-14 Luke 16: 1-2 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’ Q1 What is a steward? What accusation was made against this steward – 16:1? Luke 8-12 The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own Q1. Was the manager dishonest when he reduced the bill of those who owed? Q2. For what did the master commend the steward – 16:8,9? For honesty? Q3. Do you agree with verse 12 and give an example The Rich Man and Lazarus 17-31 Luke 22-24 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire. Q1. Do you believe that this is a true story or parable? Luke 27-31 He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” Q1 Why does the rich man want Lazarus to return from the dead? Q2 Why does Abraham refuse to have Lazarus return from the dead? Chapter 17 Sin, Faith, Duty 1-10 1-3 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. 2 It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 So watch yourselves. Q1 Please explain these verses Q2 How is it relevant to us today? And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6-7 So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. Q1 How do we increase our faith? Q2 Are some more faithful than others? (1 Corinthians 12:9) What are the Power Gifts? ( Revelation, Power and Vocal ) Faith Healing Miracles Ten Lepers Cleansed 11-17 11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Q1 What did one leper do when he had been healed? What did Jesus ask – 17:15-19? Q2 What is the significance about the Samaritan? Q3 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.” What does mean for the others who were healed The Coming of the Kingdom 20-37 20-21 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, [f]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is [g]within you.” John 18:36 ESV Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world Q1 What question was asked of Jesus, and how did He answer – 17:20,21? Q2 Explain the illustration of the eagles (vultures) – 17:37 Chapter 18 The Parable of the Persistent Widow 1-8 1-5 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [a]regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [b]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow troubles me I will [c]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” Q1 What lesson does the parable teach – 18:6-8? (Think: How do you harmonize this with Jesus’ warning against vain repetitions – Matt. 6:7?) The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector 9-14 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be [d]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Q1 What lesson(s) did Jesus say the story teaches? Q2 Was the tax collector saved. Jesus Blesses Little Children 15-17 15 Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Q1 Did Jesus baptize children? Did He say little children need baptism? Explain. Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler 18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Q1. Why do you think he asked this question? Q2. What was the response from Christ? Q3 How does this relate to us today?

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Q1. Is this the entire prayer? Q2 What is a doxology Q2 1 Chronicles 29: 10-13 (written by David) Q3 What does lead us not into temptation me? 11: 5-12 Ask and ye shall receive . 8. I say to you, he may not get up and give him bread because he is a friend. Yet, if he keeps on asking, he will get up and give him as much as he needs. Q1 Where else is this subject discussed in the Bible? ( Luke 18: 1-8) Q2. Can you give an example of persistence 11: 24-26 An Unclean Spirit Returns 24 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.” Q1. What can we learn from this passage? Q2. What common idiom do we use to say the same? 11:29-32 People seeking signs And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [h]the prophet. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. Q1 What are the signs in these days? Q2 Why are some people always seeking signs? Chapter 12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. Q1. What is hypocrisy? Q2. Do we all run the risk of being a hypocrite? The parable of the rich fool Luke 12: 13-21 Luke 12: 13-14 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” Q1. What does this tell us about saving wealth? Q2. How much should someone save Q3. How does this apply to Job: 1 20-22. Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped, 21saying: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” 22In all this, Job did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing Do not worry Luke : 12: 22-32 12: 22-23 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Q1. Do you ever think what is most important in your life? Q2. What makes you worry or lose sleep? 12: 33-34 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Q1 Where is similar subject discussed in the Bible Q2. What items (treasures) can cause us a problem in our lives Watchfulness Luke 35-47 41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?” 47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God Q1. Why was this a true miracle? Q2. Why was Christ criticized? 13: 14-15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?” Q1. Explain how the leaders were being hypocrites. The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast 18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” Q. Please explain the parable The Narrow Door 22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” Q1. What does one have to do to make it inside Luke 13: 28-30 There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.” Q1 Who are the people coming from east and west and north and south Chapter 14 Luke 14: 1-14 Jesus at a Pharisee’s House 7-9 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. Q1 What lesson can we learn from this? Q2 How do Pastors often forget this lesson? The Parable of the Great Banquet 15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” 16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ Q1. Who do the people who made excuses represent? Q2 What kind of excuses do we make today? Luke 14: 25-34 The Cost of Being a Disciple 25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Q1. What does hate mean in the scripture? Chapter 15 Lost and Found – Lost Sheep parable- 1-7 1-2 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Q1 What happened that led people to criticize? What was their criticism – 15:1,2? Q2 What is the balancing act for us today when it comes to interacting with non-christians? The Parable of the Lost Coin 8-10 The Parable of the Lost Son 11-31 11-16 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with [d]prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the [e]pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. Q1. What does this parable teach us about repentance? Q2. What does this parable teach us about love? 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son Q1 Who offered similar words when asking for forgiveness 28-31 But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’ 31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ Q1 Was the first son right to be angry? Q2 Did the second son regain his inheritance? Q3 Did the older son lose something?

  • Message: “Study of the Book of Luke part 4 Chapters 9-11” from Joe Summers

A message from the series "Sunday Service." Short Study of Book of Luke Chapters 9-11 Lesson Objective: To continue the study of Luke with emphasis on Chapters 9-11 Scripture: Various scriptures Chapter 9 9: 1-6 Christ sends out the 12 (cross reference Matthew 10: 1-15) When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. Q1- Why did Christ instruct them not to carry anything with them? Q2- What should we learn relative to not welcoming people into our house? Q3 Compare to the great commission Matthew 28: 19-20 9: 10-17 Christ feeds the 5000 15-17 But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. Q1 Why do we pray before we eat? Q2 What is the significance of the bread that was left over 9: 18-21 Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” 19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.” Q1 Why do you think Peter answered as he did? Q2 How does this compare to other versions of the story in other gospels? ( Matthew 16:18) 9: 21-27 Christ foretells his death 9: 21-22 21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” Q1. What does take up cross and deny themselves mean? Q2 9:25 Or what profit will it be unto him? all the honours, riches, and enjoyments of it will be of no use and service to him if he himself is lost What does this say about how we set our priorities? Q3 What does verse 27 mean? (Mark 9:1; Matthew 16:28) “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.” Christ Transfiguration Luke 9: 33-35 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One;[b] listen to him!” Q 1 Who went with Christ ? Q2 Who did the disciples see with Christ? Q3 What is the significance of the above verse relative to Christ and Jew’s perception of Christ? 9: 49-50 Christ admonishes to be careful whom we seek to condemn “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” 50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.” Q1 How should we respond when asked about other ministers? Chapter 10 10: 1-24 Christ sends out 72 10: 1-2 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Q1 Compare to Chapter 9 Q2 How does Christ respond to their reports when they returned? The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 10: 38-42 Christ At the Home of Martha and Mary 10: 41-42 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Q1 What can we learn from these scriptures? Q1 Was Martha wrong to not sit at the feet of Christ like Mary? Chapter 11 11: 2-4 The Lord’s Prayer And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. ( Luke 18: 1-8) 11: 24-26 An Unclean Spirit Returns 24 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order.

  • Message: “Taming the Tongue” from Min. Blessing

A message from the series "Sunday Service." Sermon 12 Feb 2023 JICF By Blessing Mugwambi Title: Taming the tongue/Controlling the tongue The words that we say represent who we are. If you are not in public, what is your speech like when you talk? The first place to locate true Christianity is from the speech. What comes out of your mouth, is it obscenities or truth? Is it love or anger and bitterness? What is it that comes out of you??? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Your tongue affects your whole life: Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue... Sometimes people hurt you and act like you hurt them. Hurt people, hurt people. What hurt in your heart needs the healing power of the Holy Spirit, so that you can stop hurting yourself, others, and God? You can snare yourself with your own words: Proverbs 6:2 You are snared with the words of your mouth. James 3:7-12 New International Version 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. The Bible compares the tongue to: -A fire: James 3:5 -A burning fire: Proverbs 16:27 -A world of iniquity: James 3:6 -A beast that needs taming: James 3:7-8 -A fountain of either fresh or bitter water: James 3:11 -A tree bearing either good or evil fruit: James 3:12 -An unruly evil: James 3:8 -Deadly poison: James 3:8 -A sharp razor: Psalms 52:2 -A sharp sword: Psalms 57:4; 59:7 -A poisonous serpent: Psalms 140:3 -A deep pit: Proverbs 22:14 Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil; for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Satan uses the things you say to cause a breach (opening) into your spirit: Proverbs 15:4 The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 18:7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 21:23 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. Satan seeks control of your tongue by tempting you to speak: COVETOUS WORDS: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have; for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5). Covetousness definition, eager or excessive desire, especially for wealth or possessions: IDOL WORDS: But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. (Matthew 12:36) EVIL ABOUT THINGS YOU DO NOT KNOW: But these speak evil of those things which they know not... (Jude 10) But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption. (II Peter 2:12) FLATTERING WORDS: For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness. (I Thessalonians 2:5) ENTICING WORDS: I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine sounding arguments. (Colossians 2:4) MURMURING, COMPLAINING, AND BOASTING WORDS: These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want. (Jude 16). VAIN WORDS: Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts (Psalms 12:2). CURSING AND BITTER WORDS: Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. (Romans 3:14) LIES: Let the lying lips be quiet. For they speak with pride and hate those who do right and good. (Psalms 31:18) CONTENTIOUS WORDS: contentious definition: causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. (Proverbs 18:6) How to term your tongue GET YOUR HEART RIGHT WITH GOD: Your mouth will speak what is in your heart. If your heart is not right, your tongue will reveal it. RECOGNIZE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: Recognize you will be held responsible for the words that come out of your mouth: But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Matthew 12:36-37) And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant... (Luke 19:22) REALIZE YOUR WORDS REFLECT ON THE GOSPEL: Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (I Timothy 4:12) KEEP YOUR WORDS FEW AND SIMPLE: Proverbs 10:19 Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK: Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent. Proverbs 17:28 SEPARATE YOURSELF: Separate yourself from those who cannot control their tongue: Stay away from a fool, for you will not find knowledge on their lips. (Proverbs 14:7) LEARN THE POWER OF PEACEFUL WORDS: Peaceful words are more powerful than words of anger: Proverbs 25:15 NLT. Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones. PATTERN YOUR CONVERSATION AFTER JESUS: Jesus spoke gracious words. Luke 4:22 NLT Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn't this Joseph's. End.
